Lower Academy

In Kindergarten through 5th grade we integrate the Christian worldview in all parts of our day to strengthen and learn the foundation of living by faith. Our Bible curriculum has daily group lessons, weekly memory verses, and learning the books of the Bible. Building a strong  Biblical foundation is the very platform on which we do everything…from loving our students, to holding them to high standards, building their character.

Lower Academy Curriculum

  • K-5th uses Orton-Gillingham which is a multi-sensory approach to learning to read. It builds upon simple phonograms to increase decoding and fluency skills, along with studying classical literature.

  • Lower Academy uses Saxon math, with an emphasis on memorization of facts building upon mathematical understanding and challenging students with algebraic equations and geometry.

  • All students are introduced to Shurley grammar, (a question and answer flow allowing students to diagram simple and complex sentences). We use Step up to Writing, and 2nd-5th grades focus on Latin vocabulary to increase vocabulary skills laying a strong foundation for future high school ACT and SAT tests.

  • K-5 Science introduces life science through real life applications, experiments, and time in God’s creation. Social Studies introduces children to Colorado and US History through interactive lessons, field trips, and bringing history to life with projects like Pioneer Days, President’s Wax Museum and more.

  • Students write quarterly book reports and complete at home projects that enhance learning done in class.

  • Lower Academy Enrichements include art, music, chapel, and daily physical education. Enrichments also include special all school programs such as the annual Spelling Bee and Speech Meet.

LOWER ACADEMY ENRICHMENTS

Elective and enrichment programs at VCA bring the Living Word to life through creative expression, hands on time outside in God’s creation, and playful connection. Lower Academy enrichments include art, chapel, music, Bible, and physical education. VCA follows the Classical Christian approach for special enrichment programs including an annual Spelling Bee, K-5 Speech Meet, and grades 3-5 Battle of the Books.

Lower Academy uses field trips to enhance learning outside the classroom.  Students set out on adventures that transform an idea on page to real life experiences. Examples of field trips include Mesa Verde, The Molly Brown House, the State Capital, Leadville, and/or Southpark City Museum.

“And I have filled him with the spirit of God, with wisdom and understanding and knowledge in all manner of work.”
Exodus 31:3

DISCIPLESHIP & FRIENDSHIP

At VCA, we believe teaching young learners how to have an authentic relationship with Jesus and with each other is an integral part of becoming a disciple for Jesus. We have created valuable days built into each quarter to focus on strengthening friendships, improving communication, and becoming disciples. These days include reading buddies, parent chaperoned ski days, end of quarter hikes, team building picnics, and community service.

“You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”
2 Timothy 2:1-2

BIBLE & CHAPEL

Bible is taught daily in Lower Academy as a unique subject, and woven throughout the other academic and enrichment programming. Lower Academy attends chapel weekly on Wednesday mornings to participate in joyful worship and be taught the word of God by special guest speakers. The first Wednesday of the month is all school praise chapel, where students are celebrated for special accomplishments, shout outs, and birthdays.

“But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”
Luke 11:28
